Renovation | |
since 8.2024
The renovation of Mary Wigman's former living quarters on the first floor of the villa will be accompanied by the creation of a future residential area. For the first time, the Wüstenrot Foundation has agreed to provide funding for this project.
Furthermore, the renovation of the residence and work rooms is also being funded by TANZPAKT – Stadt-Land-Bund with funds from the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media and the Hermann Reemtsma Foundation, as well as by investment funds from the Saxon State Ministry of Science, Culture and Tourism and the state capital Dresden.
Extensive restoration work has revealed rare silver and gold tones in the monochrome interior design, which impressively testify to Mary Wigman's creative vision. The aim of the renovation work is to bring this vision back to life. We are asking for your support in order to finance the valuable silver and gold pigments for the new coat of paint.
We assure you – your donation will be gilded!

Update February 2026
At a press conference on 12 February, the management team of villa\wigman, together with architect Annett Ammon (RKA Architekten) and master painter and restorer Tilo Hasch (Farbenwerkstatt Meißen), provided information on the current status of the renovation and the expert preservation of the historical findings.Architect Annett Ammon: ‘Villa Wigman is one of the few and at the same time outstanding examples of expressionist architecture in Saxony. Although this quality is subtle in its plastic form, it is spectacularly evident in the colour scheme. Monochrome rooms, as designed by Mary Wigman together with her architect Otto Geiler, are almost unique in their consistency.’After extensive analysis by restorer Sonja Kaeten and in collaboration with the natural paint workshop Anka Böthig (Dresden), specially coordinated colours from the Swiss manufacturer kt.COLOR were selected. The paints, made from natural pigments, enable a historically accurate reconstruction of the original colour scheme and allow the rooms to be experienced once again in all their special splendour. ‘Colour here is not just a coat of paint, but space,’ explains master painter and restorer Tilo Hasch. ‘It changes with light and movement – it is not simply painted on, but experienced. Perfection would be out of place in this location; what is crucial is trust in the material and its effect.’

Update May 2025
In August 2024, the renovation work in the future residence area began with securing work to preserve artefacts from the construction period, such as the built-in shelving wall from Mary Wigman's time. The next step was to remove all the wallpaper and old paintwork from the walls and ceilings. In addition, an extensive restoration was carried out on the colour features with rare silver and gold tones in a monochrome interior design, which impressively testify to Mary Wigman's creative will. The aim of the restoration work is to bring this back to life.
In March 2025, the windows in this area were replaced according to the original design. On the one hand, the structure of the window design of the 19th century villa was followed and, on the other, the window formats changed by Mary Wigman. These windows therefore already form a reference for the future comprehensive renovation of the windows of the entire villa building next year.
