Renovation of the
Red Hall

This week, the painters put down their brushes. The walls of the medium-sized hall have been painted red, based on the historical model of Mary Wigman's work. Despite its current unfinished state, the room already radiates the spirit of the 1920s and the inspiration of the interconnection of the arts with its intense color scheme.

Next week, the installation of the professional dance floor will begin, and in addition to the installation of a mirror wall, the restoration of original color pigments on a selected wall surface by restorer Sonja Kaeten is also planned. The suspended ceiling will have to wait a little longer, but soon it will be possible to work artistically in this hall with its restored atmosphere.

The floor was demolished, except for the wooden beams that had been preserved from the construction period. Structural, fire protection, and thermal insulation requirements made a complete rebuild necessary. In order to preserve the original wooden beams while still ensuring the maximum future height of the floor structure, the beams were lowered by approximately 12 cm. The renovation also included the installation of underfloor heating and a professional dance floor.

Renovation work on the Red Hall, status: February 2024

December 2023

On December 15, 2023, a new phase of renovation began at villa\wigman. The interior walls and floor of the so-called Red Hall are currently being renovated. The floor will be completely demolished, rebuilt from the basement up, and then fitted with underfloor heating and a sprung floor. Furthermore, the dilapidated plaster on the interior walls will be repaired, mineral plaster will be applied, electrical cables will be re-laid, and a coat of paint will be applied that brings the historic red color back to life. For this purpose, partial areas will be restored.

Wigman later recalls in an interview: (Mary Wigman, p. 76, Hedwig Müller)

“First of all, everything had to be painted. And since we were living in the Expressionist era at the time, it was only natural that my desire for color was satisfied. So, the practice room in the house was bright red! Walls, ceiling, doors, everything except the floor was bright red! ... My bedroom was gold... Black with gold.”
