Jiayi Hu

Last year, the Goethe-Institut China in Beijing, in collaboration with the Cultural Foundation of the Free State of Saxony, enabled a Chinese artist to undertake a three-month artist-in-residence programme in Saxony for the first time. In Chemnitz, the European Capital of Culture 2025, Klub Solitaer e.V. acted as the host organisation. This year, another residency will be awarded, this time in cooperation with villa\wigman in Dresden. Our team will support the scholarship holder on site, organising suitable working opportunities and accommodation. The costs for accommodation, a studio and support for the Chinese artist will be covered by the Cultural Foundation of the Free State of Saxony. Travel and living expenses will be covered by the Goethe-Institut.

Jiayi Hu works at the intersection of performance, video, photography, installation and painting. Her works have been exhibited internationally on numerous occasions and have received several awards. Her eight-week residency in Dresden begins at the end of September.

Jiayi Hu was born in Xinjiang in 1993 and completed her Master’s degree in New Media Art at the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute in 2018. The Chinese artist’s work spans performance, video, photography, installations and painting. Her works have been exhibited internationally on numerous occasions and have won several awards. She is the only student to have won the Luo Zhongli Fellowship at the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute twice. Jiayi Hu now teaches experimental video art at the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute.

Residency Grant from the Cultural Foundation of the Free State of Saxony

From Leipzig to New York, the Cultural Foundation, in cooperation with its partner institutions worldwide, awards up to ten residency grants each year. These working stays at renowned cultural institutions enable artists from Saxony to experience a change of scenery and perspective. In addition to a monthly grant, they are provided with premises free of charge in which to carry out their creative projects.
