In this parcours performance, Charles A. Washington explores different aspects of Mary Wigman’s life and legacy through a mythological and artistic lens. Drawing on historical texts, Wigman’s own writings, and perspectives from artists such as Martha Graham, Vaslav Nijinsky, and Jérôme Bel, the work weaves together voices that question, challenge, and reflect upon Wigman’s position in history.
Each room of the villa hosts a distinct perspective, accompanied by music from Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring and informed by movement qualities derived from Rudolf Laban’s efforts and drives. These choreographic signatures embody the tensions between expression, spirituality, freedom, and structure that were central to Wigman’s practice.
The audience is invited to move freely between three rooms, observing the development of these characters. The parcours culminates in a collective gathering, where all voices converge in a ritual-like experience that opens a space for reflection on Wigman — not as a fixed monument, but as a complex figure whose presence continues to provoke questions today.
In this parcours, Charles A. Washington explores Mary Wigman through myth, history, and dance. Voices of artists such as Martha Graham, Vaslav Nijinsky, and Jérôme Bel enter the villa alongside music from The Rite of Spring, each inhabiting a room with their own movement quality. The audience is free to wander, witnessing how these perspectives unfold. In the end, all voices gather in a ritual-like encounter that opens a space for reflection on Wigman’s complex legacy.
